Kizomba is one of the most popular styles of music danced in Lusophone African countries as well as in
Portugal. Sung in Portuguese or Creole, it is a genre of music with a Euro-centric romantic flow, mixed
with African rhythm. Kizomba is native of the African country of Angola, with influences from other Lusophone countries. It is known for having a slow, insistent, somewhat harsh, yet sensuous rhythm and is considered to be a fusion of semba (a predecessor of samba) with ‘Zouk’ influences coming from the French Caribbean Islands.
The Kizomba dancing style is very sensual. In Cape Verde Islands it is known as “cabo love”, as it is ideally danced accompanied by a partner, very smoothly and slowly, though not too tightly. The influence of the Angolan Kizomba is felt in most Portuguese speaking African countries, but IT is also spreading to a number of clubs in Portugal (mostly in Lisbon), where communities of immigrants have established a steady number of successful clubs on the genre. In Angola most clubs are based in Luanda.
Famous Angolan Kizomba musicians include, among others, Don Kikas, MC Roger and Irmãos Verdade. The Sãotomean Kizomba is very similar to the Angolan one and Juka is, perhaps, the most notable among the Sãotomeans.
Capeverdean Kizomba is different from the Angolan one due to the language used (often Creole instead of Portuguese) and a more romantic and less harsh rhythm and lyrics. It is also called "Kizomba Crioula" (Creole Kizomba). Suzanna Lubrano is one of the most successful among Capeverdean performers – she was considered the best African performer in 2003. Other known Capeverdeans are Beto Dias, Gil Semedo, Philip Monteiro, os quatro, Gama and Tó Semedo. Many prominent Capeverdean Kizomba singers live today in Portugal and in the Netherlands.
